《臺灣音畫》完成於1999年，2000年2月27日由美國指揮家亨利．梅哲（Henry Mazer) 指揮台北愛樂管弦樂團首演。


這部由〈玉山日出〉、〈安平懷古〉、〈宜蘭童謠〉、〈恒春鄉愁〉、〈泰雅情歌〉、〈鹿港廟會〉、〈龍山晚鐘〉及〈達邦節日〉等八個樂章組成的交響曲，描繪了臺灣的民風民情，展現了臺灣的鄉土鄉音，表達作曲家鮑元愷先生在臺灣的所見所聞，所感所思。願這部作品帶著寶島特有的濕潤與溫暖，以樂觀的胸懷為這個正在迅速改變的時代留下美好壯麗的畫影，用溫馨的旋律留下語言無法表達的刻骨記憶與深切眷戀。2016年，《臺灣音畫》由臺北市立國樂團委託孫光軍先生改編為國樂版，本場演出第五、六樂章。

V.〈泰雅情歌〉：泰雅族（Atayal），是臺灣原住民中分布面積最廣的一族，男擅狩獵、女擅紡織。泰雅青年男女是自由戀愛擇偶。泰雅男子往往以吹奏「魯布」（口弦）向女子表示愛慕，女子如願相許，則接過口弦回奏一曲。由此，雙方便用唱情歌的方式談情說愛，深化日漸濃烈的感情。作曲家創作此曲，希望能呈現出〈泰雅情歌〉似水柔情，同時透過音符的堆疊，描繪泰雅人居住地的山景美色，以及在迷人的夜色下，情人們的竊竊私語。


VI.〈鹿港廟會〉：鹿港天后宮是臺灣400多座媽祖廟之一，是臺灣唯一奉祀湄洲祖廟開基聖母神像的廟宇。天后宮的主人，慈眉善目的媽祖，傳說原是宋初湄州女林默娘。她一生為漁民消災驅邪，羽化升天之後被封為天妃、天后、聖母，成了全世界華人心目中共同的海上保護神。天后宮門口由嗩吶、鑼鼓組成的「北管」武場，與月琴、琵琶、笛、簫組成的歌仔戲文場，成為作曲家創作〈鹿港廟會〉的快板部分之主要素材，最後慢板部分的旋律則是民間小調《農村酒歌》。

Sketches of Taiwan was completed in 1999, and debuted in Taipei on 27 February, 2000, with American maestro Henry Mazer conducting The Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra. The symphony consists of 8 movements, namely "Sunrise on Jade Mountain", "Recollections of Anping", "Ilan Children’s Dit", "Homesick for Hengchun", "Atayal Love Song", "Lukang Temple Gathering", "The Bell of Longshan Temple in Lukang", and "Dabang Festival".

The piece is a personal log of the customs and tunes, the sights and sounds, the thoughts and feelings experienced by the composer during his stay in Taiwan. The composer hopes that the work, which has maintained the special atmosphere of moisture and warmth of Ilha Formosa (Portuguese for ‘beautiful island’), leads out of the inherent tragic sense in Taiwanese culture, and leaves a lasting, positive image of beauty for this past-paced modern world. All that words cannot express—the memories, the longing—these will be memorized for the future in song. In 2016, the Taipei Chinese Orchestra commissioned SUN Guangjun to adapt the piece for a Chinese orchestra. Today’s concert will present the fifth and forth movements.

V. “Atayal Love Song” : Among the aboriginal tribes of Taiwan, the Atayal is the most widely distributed across the island. The tribes’ males are known for superb hunting skills, the females for excellent weavings. Atayal youths may freely choose whom they court and marry. During courting, Atayal men will play a type of mouth harp called the “lubu” to show affection to a certain female. If she accepts his affection, she will take his lubu and play a tune back to him. It is these love songs that take the place of words, for the Atayal, as they court and fall ever deeper in love. In writing Atayal Love Song, the composer hoped to express the tender feelings of love within these courting songs. The enchanting landscape of the Atayal home is also an important part of the composition, as it forms the backdrop to the whisperings between these lovers as they sit together under a blanket of stars.


VI. “Lukang Temple Gathering” : Lukang Mazu Temple stands as one of more than four-hundred Mazu temples in Taiwan, though this one in particular is the only one to hold the original patron goddess statues of the Meizhou Mazu Temple where the earthly Mazu was born. Though despite her many names she was commonly seen as a benevolent protector of all things maritime. The suona and gong at the entrance to Lukang Mazu Temple, which are Beiguan instruments, along with the Yueqin, Pipa, Dizi and Xiao, form the composer’s go-to instruments for the allegro section, while the adagio section near the end uses the melody from the “Farmer’s Drinking Song” in minor key.
