The Oscar Niemeyer Museum, also known as the Eye Museum or MON, in Curitiba, Paraná, is an art museum.
The complex of two buildings, installed in an area of thirty-five thousand square meters (of which nineteen thousand are dedicated to the exhibition area), is a true example of architecture combined with art.
The first building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1967, faithful to the style of the time, conceived as an Institute of Education. This building has the second largest free span in Brazil, with 65 m. It was renovated and adapted to the function of a museum, for which Niemeyer designed the annex, resembling an eye, giving it a new characteristic identity.
Inaugurated on November 22, 2002 under the name of New Museum, with the completion of the annex it was reopened on July 8, 2003, receiving the current name. It is known locally as "Museu do Olho", due to the design of its building, or as "MON", short for Oscar Niemeyer Museum.
The institution focuses on visual arts, architecture and design. Due to its grandeur, beauty and the importance of the collection, it currently represents a cultural institution with national and international projection.
Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho, born in Rio de Janeiro, December 15, 1907 and also deceased in Rio de Janeiro, December 5, 2012, was a Brazilian architect, considered one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture.
Niemeyer was best known for the civic building projects for Brasília, a planned city that became Brazil's capital in 1960, as well as for his collaboration with the group of UN member state-nominated architects who designed the United Nations headquarters in Nova York, United States.
His exploration of the constructive possibilities of reinforced concrete was highly influential at the time, as in late 20th and early 21st century architecture.
Praised and criticized for being a "sculptor of monuments", Niemeyer was a great artist and one of the greatest architects of his generation by his supporters. He claimed that his architecture was heavily influenced by Le Corbusier, but in an interview he asserted that this "has not stopped [his] architecture from going in a different direction".
