In this Lecture on World Exploration, I will discuss the Age of Discovery when Western Europe began to explore the World between the 15th and 18th Centuries. This began in the 15th Century when Western nations such as Portugal and Spain sought new trade routes to reach Asia.

Here are some basic topics that I will cover in this Lecture on various historical events or famous people associated with this period:

What was the Age of Discovery? Who was Prince Henry the Navigator? What were these famous Portuguese explorers known for: Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral? Who was Christopher Columbus? What areas of the New World did Columbus explore? What was the Treaty of Tordesillas? What was the Columbian Exchange? What was Ferdinand Magellan famous for? what were some major discoveries that occurred with the first circumnavigation of the world (1519-1522)? what island in 1497 did John Cabot discover in his exploration of eastern Canada and North America? what were English explorers Henry Hudson and James Cook famous for? what was Jacques Cartier famous for as a French explorer? who was Father of New France (later called Canada)? what river did Robert de la Salle explore and discover its mouth to the Gulf of Mexico in 1682? what was Vitus Bering famous for as an explorer for Russia?

This Lecture uses a short video clip from the History Channel documentary "Great Explorers" on Christopher Columbus. Columbus, an Italian explorer sailing for Castile (Spain), was the first major explorer in modern times to discover part of the Americas in 1492.
