The Kapal Kundala Temple is situated at Dariyapur in Contai of East Midnapore. Kapalkundala - the classic novel of Bankim Chandra is based upon the adjoining villages of Dariapur and Daulatpur along with the Rasulpur River. As per the novel, Kapalkundala was found and brought up by a Tantric (Kapalik) who used to carry out his sadhana in the temple. Later Nabakumar found Kapalkundala here.

During his stay at Dariapur and Daulatpur as the Deputy Magistrate, Bankim Chandra was moved by the scenic beauty of these places. At this time, he also met a Tantric. The novel Kapalkundala - inspired from Shakespeare's Tempest was based on this region and it is considered that the tantric of Kapalkundala was inspired from the Tantric whom Bankim Chandra met. The character of Kapalkundala is also believed to be inspired from the village girls of the region who were kidnapped by the Portuguese pirates and sold as slaves.

There are mainly two temples, one Chandi temple in Dalan style and the Shiva temple in Atchala style. It is believed that the temples were built by a villager Atmaram Pal. The Chandi temple is a brick built East facing temple with no terracotta ornamentation. There is a porch with 3 arched openings in front of the sanctum.
