Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, was queen consort of Portugal born on January 4, 1271 in Zaragoza, Spain. She joined the Third Order of St. Francis, devoting the rest of her life to the poor and sick in obscurity after the death of her husband Denis, king of Portugal. She established orphanages and provided shelter for the homeless and also founded a convent in Coimbra. She died on July 4, 1336 in Estremoz, Portugal and was buried in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, Coimbra, Portugal.
