She played the role of Persephone in the 2003 science-fiction films The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, Mary Magdalene in the 2004 biblical drama The Passion of the Christ, Malèna Scordia in the 2000 film Malèna and Alex in the controversial art film Irréversible. ON THE MILKY ROAD 2016 (Serbian: На млечном путу, Na mlečnom putu; Italian: Lungo la Via Lattea) is a 2016 film directed by Emir Kusturica, based on his segment in the anthology film Words with Gods. On the Milky Road stars Kusturica himself and Monica Bellucci, The film is a three part narrative following selected critical periods in the life of a man and his country. The difficult period of being at war, blooming days when he falls in love with a woman who is willing to sacrifice all to save him and final days as a reclusive monk looking back on his turbulent past. It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
