This lecture focuses on India around 1500 and the Portuguese in India; the lecture should be assessed alongside lectures on Sikhism and the Mughal empire. With the coming of the Portuguese, we can speak of the beginning of sea or maritime power in India (barring the Cholas); we also have to think of the European phase of Indian history. We see how the Portuguese acquired a foothold on the west coast of India, their subversion of the rules of the Indian Ocean trading system, the role of Vasco da Gama, Albuquerque, and Pedros Cabral, and the Inquisition carried out by the Portuguese. We consider the legacy of the Portuguese and the extremely critical account of the Portuguese in India by K M Panikkar. The lecture ends with an account of one remarkable contribution as a consequence of the Portuguese in India, namely a medical and botanical treatise by Garcia d'Orta.
