The adaptation of the eponymous novel by Agustina Bessa-Luís portrays the relationship between a young writer and her aunt, inspired by real people, living in the northern Portuguese countryside in the mid-20th century. Feelings of jealousy and admiration between the two women are portrayed magnificently by the great Portuguese novelist and adapted to film with great accuracy.
