Aisha-al Alami was a 15/16th century Andalusian refugee who fled Al-Andalus with her family to Morocco, following the surrender of the city Granada by Emir Muhammad XII to Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Spain.
Aisha -al Alami beared a heavy weight of destiny upon her young shoulders after her husband - the governor of Tetouan Ali Al Mandri died. Her husband’s death elevated her to the distinct position of being the sole governor of Tetouan. This resulted in her receiving the distiniguished title of ‘Hurra’ which was a title bestowed upon women of sovereignty and queens. She would now be known as ’Sayyida al-Hurra’ and would be the last person in history to receive the title ‘Hurra’. Hence why she is known as the last Queen of Islam.
She was a woman - living in a world of men - made by men. Her responsibility was to continue to build the broken city of Tetouan by engaging in direct conflict with Portuguese and Spanish ships - looting them - and using the booty to rebuild the city.
Her life is one of heartbreak, passion, love, betrayal and more. She was the antithesis of the stereotypical Muslim woman, whose story is one that will inspire Muslim women to realise the power that lives within them and proof that just one person can shape the world. Be they male or female.
