Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant, or expat, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful family for six years now.
Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid-Winter as we visit and give you a virtual tour of the rural, stone, mountain, valley town of Manteigas.
Me and Mariana begin by introducing ourselves on the beautiful mountain side, looking over the glacial valley and of course the river Zezere.
First things first we park up near the town centre, see a large mural depicting some of the things Manteigas is famous for, such as the wool production, shepherding and the breed of dog native to here, the Serra da Estrela!
We walk a bit further down the road and see a large map with some things wrote about Manteigas, along with an absolutely gorgeous poem which tells the story of how todays children abandoned the mountainside for a life in the city. A very sad and unfortunately it is quite true to what happens in the world.
After the walk in we decide we are hungry and we find ourselvesd a little restaurant, Central Restaurant is the name, we sat down to eat and had a long chat with the owners of the restaurant, lovely people and we highly, highly recommend you to pay them a visit, my personal recommendation is to try the brown trout which is served in an olive oil and orange sauce, to die for!!
Once we had refuelled our bodies we went next door to the artesnal shop, where we took a look around at all the regional produce, we bought ourselves some very fitting local produce, woollen items for me and Mariana and then a wheel of sheep cheese for us both to share. Absolutely delightful.
Once we had looked around the shop we made our way to the trout hatchery, it is free entry and we just walked straight inside and wandered around, taking a look at all the brown and rainbow trout inside their vats. We used our cameras to take a peek underwater at the trout swimming around inside.
The sun sets behind the mountain valley there rather early, we had not explored everything in Manteigas but we were forced to call it a day, so to speak. So we made our way home back to our farm, there we celebrated our five year anniversary with me cooking some mussels for Mariana, her favourite food. I showed my recipe and how to debeard mussels.
Then at the very end of the day, whilst the sun was setting over the farm I took a stroll up to our sheep barn, there I did a little check up on our pregnant ewes and checked their progression, which of course there was none, although checking them in the field is an all but daily task that I really enjoy doing, so no hardships there for me!
I say my goodbyes to you all under the low shade of the oak trees, cast by the suns departure. I explain a little about what we have been doing this week and ask you to all please click that subscribe button, it really would help our channel to grow immensely, so I thank you very much for that.
I hope you all have an amazing week ahead!
