(30 Mar 2017) Chilean President Michele Bachelet reaffirmed the importance of free trade and cooperation between countries within the global context during a visit to Portugal on Thursday.
Bachelet spoke following a meeting with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during a state visit to Portugal, where she is due to hold talks with local officials and preside at a bilateral trade conference.
Bachelet arrived Thursday in Evora, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) east of the capital Lisbon, where she was to receive an honorary doctorate from the city's university.
The Chilean President was met by de Sousa and given full military honors in Evora's Giraldo square.
The university said it was granting the award due to Bachelet's "exceptional" career as a doctor and her commitment to human rights and the wellbeing of the Chilean people.
Bachelet is scheduled to spend Friday in Lisbon, meeting Prime Minister Antonio Costa and visiting Parliament as well as taking part in a business seminar.
