Aceh is today a province of Indonesia that was granted special autonomous status in 2005. Aceh has a long history of resisting many foreign invaders. In ancient times, when many sultans of the Sumarta islands formed alliances with invaders, Aceh always fought with the foreign invaders (the Portuguese, the Dutch, and later Indonesia itself).
