Police said today they have received new tip-offs about the Madeleine McCann case as it emerged that a German paedophile suspected of snatching her raped a woman in the same Portuguese resort less than two years before the child disappeared.
The suspect, 43, carried out the sex attack on his 72-year-old American victim in Praia da Luz in September 2005 and is now in prison in Germany after being convicted of the offence only last year.
He also has two convictions for “sexual contact” with girls and is a drifter suspected of burgling hotels and holiday complexes on the Algarve, where he lived for 12 years before leaving after Madeleine vanished.
The revelations came as phone lines were reported to be “hot” with potential tip-offs following a televised appeal in Germany last night for information about Madeleine’s disappearance and possible murder. Scotland Yard confirmed that new information has been received.
The prime suspect, who has been identified as Christian Brueckner, is alleged to have discussed Madeleine’s disappearance in an online chat room.
